Life cycle assessments of the mining and mineral processing of iron ore, bauxite and copper concentrate were carried out, focussing on embodied energy and greenhouse gas emissions. The results showed that loading and hauling make the largest contributions to the total greenhouse gas emissions for the mining and processing of iron ore and bauxite.
Research studies in the iron ore mines of Goa highlighted that mining operations vastly and disproportionately increase the hardships borne by women in their role as caretaker of food, water and health of the family as well as their livelihood.
Openpit mines produce 8 to 10 times as much waste as underground mines [1]. II. LAND DEGRADATION The ratio of overburden excavated to the amount of mineral removed is called the stripping ratio. For example a stripping ratio of 4:1 means that 4 tonnes of waste rock are removed to extract one tonne of ore.

Presplitting is a controlled blasting technique with applications in open pit mines. The main objectives of presplitting in open pit mining are: preventing/controlling backbreak; controlling excessive ground vibrations; and filtering the effects of explosive gases from production blasting.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency released the environmental assessment report for the openpit iron ore mine in Labrador proposed by Howse Minerals Ltd. this month.
Iron ore. Iron ore is rock containing enough iron content, and in sufficient volume and accessibility to mining and transportation to be able to be economically mined. Iron in ore iron is most commonly found in the form of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4), hematite (Fe 2 O 3), goethite (FeO(OH)), limonite (FeO(OH)·n(H 2 O)) or siderite (FeCO 3).
